St Columba sailed to Iona from Ireland
in 563AD. With the help of twelve companions he founded his Celtic
monastic settlement. This marked the true beginnings of Christianity in
Scotland, spreading eventually to Northern Europe and beyond.
The designs found in the Celtic illuminated manuscripts
(the most famous of which, The Book of Kells, was started on Iona) have
been used in jewelry, leatherwork, woodwork and needlework. Their
beauty, symbolism, symmetry and their humour, are a pleasure to work with.
These kits, most of which use designs taken from The Book
of Kells, are available in a variety of colours and can be framed or made
into cushions. |
