Since Columba established his church on Iona, it has been a place of pilgrimage for those seeking to be enlightened, absolved and healed.

After Columba's death his relics still drew a steady stream of pilgrims to the island to experience their reputed miraculous powers.  The only relic from the saint's actual bodily remains was his hand, other relics included belongings such as his tunic, hand bell and gospel book.

Although no longer a monastery, the monastic buildings have been used as a centre for hospitality and reflection by the Iona Community since they began to restore them in 1938.
